Questions to ask

Ask how long outages usually last, whether they leave home during storms, whether anyone relies on medical equipment, and what they absolutely cannot lose. Those answers matter as much as square footage.

Fuel supply

Do not promise that an existing gas meter, regulator, pipe, or propane tank is adequate from appearance alone. Record the exact selected model's full-load demand; the licensed fuel technician/utility or propane supplier must verify total connected load, pressure, regulator, line sizing, and source capacity.

Quick generator sizing assistant

This is a sales planning tool, not the final NEC load calculation. Select the loads the customer expects during an outage. The app adds a planning surge allowance and recommends the next available Generac size based on the selected fuel.
Heat-pump sizes in plain English: 1 ton = 12,000 BTU/hr, so 24,000 BTU = 2 ton and 36,000 BTU = 3 ton. BTU/ton is heating/cooling capacity — not generator electrical draw. The generator must ultimately be sized from the heat pump’s electrical/nameplate data (MCA/MOCP/input/LRA or manufacturer data). The values below are only planning allowances.
House size can influence the general lights/outlets allowance for whole-home backup. Water heater, range, dryer, well pump, heat pump, EV charger, etc. are based on the actual appliance/equipment — not square footage.

How to use this

Whole-home generator sizing is not just “house square footage.” Large electric loads, motor starting, fuel type, load management, service size, and customer expectations all matter. If the customer has electric resistance heat, multiple large heat pumps, EV charging, a hot tub, or another unusually large load, flag the job for installer review before promising a size.

Generator location & installation path

Manufacturer clearances and local rules control the final location. Current Generac air-cooled literature may permit close-to-structure installations in certain conditions, but openings, fresh-air intakes, local codes, and the exact installation manual still govern.

Required sales photos

Customer visualization: on the proposed-location photo, add a conceptual standby generator, pad and optional clearance guide. The original photo stays untouched.

Installer handoff — Maine field readiness
Sales-side preflight. Record what you can see; the licensed electrician/fuel technician and AHJ make the final code, sizing, permit, and installation decisions. Maine electrical work starting July 1, 2026 uses the 2026 NEC as adopted by the State.
